Sageo — The Cord That Carries the Sword

The sageo (pronounced SAH-geh-oh) is the long, flat woven cord laced through the scabbard’s knob. If the kurigata is the anchor point, the sageo is the line itself, the cord that ties the sword to the body, secures it in transit, and, on a display piece, finishes the mounting with a deliberate knot. It is the most flexible part of an otherwise rigid object, and it carries more meaning than its modest size suggests.

What it is and what it’s for

The sageo runs from the kurigata on the saya and is tied off in one of several traditional knots. Worn through a sash, it keeps the scabbard from sliding free as the wearer moves; standing on a rack, it is folded into a clean decorative tie that frames the lacquer. Practically, it also let a swordsman secure the sleeves of a kimono or lash the sheath in place before drawing. It is a working piece of cordage first and an ornament second.

Materials, weave, and quality

A good sageo is woven, not braided round like a shoelace, and lies flat. Silk is the traditional and finest choice: it holds a knot crisply, has a soft luster, and ages beautifully. Cotton is the honest everyday alternative, hard-wearing and matte. The weave should be dense and even, the ends finished so they do not fray, and the width and color chosen to converse with the rest of the mounting, often echoing the handle wrap so the cord and the grip read as one design. A thin, shiny, slippery cord that will not hold a knot is synthetic filler and a sign of a budget build. Hold it: real silk or cotton has body and a quiet texture, where plastic feels hard and cold.

Why it matters when you choose

The sageo is the easiest part of a sword to swap, so it is also where you express taste, matching it to the menuki or the lacquer of the saya. But on the sword you buy, treat it as a finish check: a frayed, plasticky cord on an otherwise good blade hints at corners cut elsewhere, while a supple, well-dyed one signals care that runs all the way down to the temper line. Most swords in our katana collection ship with a fitted cord, and if you are setting up a display sword the sageo is your final flourish. See where it fits in the complete anatomy of the katana.
