Habaki — The Blade Collar That Locks It All

The habaki (pronounced HAH-bah-kee) is a small wedge-shaped collar of soft metal that grips the blade just ahead of the guard. It is the least glamorous and arguably the most important fitting on a katana — the keystone that locks the blade into its mounting and into its scabbard.

What the Habaki Is

Sit it on the blade where the steel passes out of the guard and you have the habaki: a tapered sleeve, usually copper, brass, or silver, fitted tight over the base of the blade above the tang. Behind it sit the spacers and the guard; ahead of it is the live blade. It is the one piece that touches both the sharpened steel and the soft furniture, which is why it is always made of a metal soft enough never to scratch the edge.

Its Role and How It’s Made

The habaki carries the whole sword’s weight. When the katana rests in its scabbard, the blade hangs from this collar wedged against the mouth of the saya — the blade itself never touches the wooden walls, which is how a polished surface and a clean temper line survive years of sheathing. A smith files the habaki by hand from a folded strip, fitting it to the unique taper of each blade so it grips by friction alone, then often adds diagonal file marks (neko-gaki, cat scratches) to bite into the scabbard mouth. A perfect habaki slides off with firm thumb pressure and stays put under its own friction — no glue, no slop.

Why It Matters to a Buyer

A loose habaki is a deal-breaker. If it rattles or the blade slips in the scabbard, the locking system has failed and the polish and edge are at risk. Check that it seats with a soft, positive click and that the blade draws clean and true. This single collar is why the seppa and guard can be pulled tight at all — it is the anchor of the whole assembly. We hold every blade in our battle-ready katana and master-grade range to a hand-fitted habaki; see how the collar, guard, and scabbard work as one system on the anatomy guide and in how it’s forged.
